Talking about mission, purpose, and values can feel like an especially unimportant task in a startup, where early employees barely have time to take a break from coding, designing, or selling to have lunch, let alone engage in a long conversation that feels more like philosophy than hustle. This presents a difficult challenge for startups since the only way to build a deeply unified mission is through lots of good, old-fashioned conversation. Startups need to hustle, no doubt. Startups will die because of a lack of hustle. But how many startups turn into great brands? That’s the more important question for me.
